August 2008 Jump-Off-The-Page Winner Of The Month â€" Jared from Marketing Diner Last week I was in Nashville doing presentations at Vanderbilts Owen School of Management. I was seriously impressed with the building (one building dedicated to the MBA program sweet!), campus (the trees and flowers and plants are AMAZING), career center staff (very, very competent and on first-name basis with many students; also, very involved with the student process much more involved than Ive seen in many other places), students (sharp, great questions, and determined) and faculty (who came to one of my workshops extra credit for them!).   I met Jared Degnan, owner of Marketing Diner, and twitterer at Twitter.com/marketingdiner.   Jared comes across as a pretty nice guy, and is well known by many of his Owen peers.   If I was going up against Jared for a marketing position, Id be nervous.   Why?   Because his blog and tweets talking about marketing, and social marketing, would really set him apart from his competition.   Check out the tagline for Marketing Diner (below the logo):   I think its easy to get consumed with school, work, social life, etc. when you are in school thats what happened to me.   But Jared is developing his own job security by establishing a foundation to his personal brand RIGHT NOW.   His blog is smart, but beyond that, hes helping future employers, clients, employees, and others in the marketing space know who he is his professional breadth and depth.   He is giving you a window into his professional capacity, and could easily be seen as a thought leader in the marketing space. Focus on the top-third of your resume.Regardless of whether you are crunched for timeâ€"or have hours to spend writing and formattingâ€"the top third of your resume is the most critical. Since hiring managers only spend a few seconds reviewing each resume during the first pass-through, the top portion of your resume needs to be BANGING. When meeting with clients, I always encourage them to print out their resume (yes, I said “print out” for my fellow millennials) and fold it in thirds. Then, I have them read just the top-t hird.A hiring manager should want to interview them based on that top-third alone, nothing else. If the top-third isn’t impressive, further updates are needed (such as additions to the Career Summary, moving some sections around or sprinkling in additional accomplishments).2. Remove your objective statement.This is one of the quickest things you can do to improve your resume, and one of the first things I check for when updating a resume for a client.Objective statements are circa 2010 (maybe even 2005) and unnecessary. It is clear what your objective is â€" To land the job, internship, etc., that you are applying for. Instead, write a concise Career Summary or Professional Profile (or whatever else you want to call it) that describes who you are and what you have to offer in five-ish sentences or bullet points.For those who still remember 10th Grade English, a Career Summary is like a “thesis” for your resume â€" It’s a preview of what’s to come, without sharing all of th e good stuff just yet.3. Add numbers and percentages (when appropriate and helpful).Coming from a fundraising background, this is one of my favorite tips on how to improve your resume fast! Numbers and percentages provide employers with the scope of your responsibility, as well as insight into your accomplishments.But don’t overdo it â€" only add numbers when appropriate and helpful. Knowing how much you brought in in sales each month â€" super relevant. Knowing how much money was inside the register that you operate â€" not relevant. Review each noun on your resume and see if it would benefit from an added adjective. Heres an article on how to come up with impressive numbers/figures to put on your resume.4. Move the most relevant info to the top.While you should spend time tailoring your resume for every job that you apply to, we all know that customizing resumes is a timely process and does not take just a few minutes. Plus, this article is dedicated to quick As such, I suggest just focusing on the order of your resume for now, ensuring that the most relevant info is at the top.Your most relevant experience should always be near the top, even if it is not your most recent experience, as you can always have multiple sections that list you experience (such as, “Relevant Experience” and “Additional Experience”).While dependent on your field and amount of experience, your education should also appear near the top of your resume, along with relevant certificates, software proficiency and knowledge of multiple languages.5. Sprinkle accomplishments throughout your resume.This is my other favorite tip, and not just because of my love for sprinkled donuts. While it’s important to include responsibilities on your resume, the focus should be on accomplishments. Most position titles give a decent idea of what the job entails; just add a few descriptive sentences about your responsibilities and the hiring manager will know what you did. However, hiring manage rs don’t just want to know what you did, they want to know what you accomplished.To give them this, sprinkle your best accomplishments throughout your resume; employers want to know what you did to ROCK the job and go beyond just the outline position description. Remember to include relevant numbers and percentages with those accomplishments! Focusing on accomplishments instead of just responsibilities is one of the best ways (if not the absolute best way) to make your resume stand out.6. Ensure your resume font is clean and consistent.The style of your resume can say a lot about your professional demeanor (or there lack off). Subsequently, your resume should present itself as professional, clean and easy to read from top to bottom. Body text should be no smaller than 10 point (my preference is 11 point) and headers should be in the 14 16 point range. Use capitalization, bold and italicize consistently (i.e., all position titles bolded, all dates italicized).While I am a fan of u sing color on resumes, keep it simple and use it sparingly, such as a nice blue for headers and contact info. Also make sure your bullet points line up properly and there are no formatting inconsistencies. Heres a full article on how to format your resume for success, top to bottom.7. Remove “References available upon request.”This is one of my biggest resume pet peeves. The reason for this tip is similar to tip #2 â€" it’s assumed that references will be available upon request, otherwise why would you be applying for a job if you weren’t willing to dish out a few references?Bonus Tip: If you have an actual list of references at the end of your resume, you can scratch those, too. Applying for the NHS Scientist Training Programme (STP) in 2020 University of Manchester Careers Blog

Applying for the NHS Scientist Training Programme (STP) in 2020 University of Manchester Careers Blog STP 2020 â€" now open for applications until Monday 20th January 2020 at 5pm. The NHS Scientist Training Programme (STP) is open for applications for September 2020.   Thousands of scientists and engineers of all disciplines work for the NHS, and the STP is how they recruit most of their Clinical Science trainees each year. Many Manchester students and postgrads apply to the STP, so we update this blog post each year to help you navigate the process (well also update it when there is new information to share with you). N.B. Some of the resources mentioned in this post may only be accessible by University of Manchester students. If you are not a Manchester student, have a chat with your own Careers Service about the support available to you. Tips for applying   As a direct applicant, you have until 5pm on Monday 20th January to submit your online application and until 5pm on Wednesday 22nd January to complete the online tests.   Submit your application well in advance of the deadline: if you experience any last minute hiccups with your application or the tests, they cannot guarantee to deal with queries in the final 48 hours before each deadline. The National School of Healthcare Science website has so much information for applicants it can be overwhelming â€" however, if you want the best chance of getting into these super-competitive posts, you’ll hoover it all up and use the advice in your application. A good place to start is by reading the FAQs and the STP Recruitment process guidance for applicants 2020.   Read the job description and person spec to get an overview of the role, then thoroughly research the specialism you plan to apply for e.g. check out the relevant professional body for each specialism. The list of STP specialisms by location is usually updated throughout the application window, and for 2020 there are 314 vacancies across 33 specialisms (new ones for 2020 include ‘Critical Care Science’ and ‘Medical Device Risk Management and Governance’). Each specialism has a different number of vacancies and not in all regions of the UK. You’ll have to inspect each specialism individually, but as you are encouraged to focus your application on your chosen specialism and not the region, it does make sense: they want to see some focus, people! Manchester Academy for Healthcare Science Education (or MAHSE) holds an STP open day in January: it takes place on the 8th January in 2020 (if you miss it, the main talks are podcast and include some really useful tips). Scotland recruit their STP trainees separately and take on about 20 annually.   These are usually advertised later in the year. Keep an eye on their website for details.   The posts in NHS Wales are also advertised separately and in previous years have been posted on the NHS jobs website.   That’s not to say they’ll do the same this year, though… We have been told previously that only 3 candidates are interviewed per post, so the competition is red hot (data nerds/masochists can check out the competiton ratios). You’ll therefore need some great answers to the essay questions:     set aside some time to do your research, reflect on your experience and craft your answers â€" do yourself justice here. Online application form The online application form has not changed from last year, so if you applied last year, you know what to expect. (If you applied last year, it’ll even autofill some of the application form so double check it is still accurate). Frustratingly, there is still no easy way to preview all the questions before you start to fill it out â€" so we’ve had a sneaky peek for you. As you go through the online form for the first time, you can’t advance on to the next page without completing the mandatory sections. However, you can review and change most of the answers once you get to the end â€" just don’t press “Submit” until AFTER you have filled it all in and checked it thoroughly! There are lots of mandatory sections, and once you fill in some answers, other mandatory questions may appear.   Be prepared to answer A LOT of questions about eligibility, fitness to practise etc before you even get to the bit where you fill in your education.   You also need to supply the details of three referees, one of whom must be your most recent education supervisor (or line manager, if you have graduated and are in work). When your application form is read by the people who will shortlist candidates for interview, they wont be able to see the choices that candidates have made. Hence, if you choose two different specialisms your application will go to both short listing panels, who will not know if you have ranked that specialism as first or second choice. They also will not see any candidate names â€" it is done completely blind. Essay questions The form asks the same four questions as last year and, again, you are allowed a maximum of 250 words per answer. An implicit test here is whether you can write accurately AND concisely. YOUR KNOWLEDGE, MOTIVATION AND COMMITMENT TO THE TRAINING PROGRAMME In less than 250 words, please state why you have applied for the Healthcare Scientist Training Programme. Give details of your motivation, suitability and future career development or aspirations. Describe what actions you have undertaken to increase your knowledge, experience and understanding of healthcare science and the training programme for your chosen specialism(s). YOUR COMMITMENT TO HEALTHCARE SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY In less than 250 words, please describe your commitment, interest and enjoyment of scientific practice and technology. Please provide examples of how you seek to develop, improve and adopt innovative processes in your work or studies. VALUES AND BEHAVIOURS The NHS Constitution* values and behaviours are paramount to the delivery of healthcare services.   In less than 250 words please describe how within your own experience you would display these qualities. (*Have you read it yet? You really need to! You can find it here (and there is also a useful video here).   We also suggest you check out the NHS Long Term Plan too as this may help inform your other answers). TEAM WORKING AND LEADERSHIP In less than 250 words describe occasions where you have worked as part of a team and outline the skills you used to benefit the outputs of that team. Also, please describe a situation or situations when you have taken the opportunity to lead others and identify how you managed any challenges that arose.   (Important: they are looking for scientific leaders, not practioners). There’s help on completing application forms on our website, including a useful hand-out. We definitely recommend taking the Context-Action-Result approach to structure your answers, to help keep them concise. Always take time to proof read your answers before you submit them (a good tip is to read through them backwards to spot typos). University of Manchester students and recent graduates can get assistance from the Applications Advice service in the Atrium in University Place and also look out for Appointments in your School. Online tests After you submit your online application, you have two tests to complete before the deadline, and you have to get through each of these for your application to be considered. The tests are numerical reasoning and logical reasoning, and you can practise here. We guess they’re using logical reasoning tests to find people who are good at spotting patterns and trends (useful for diagnostics) as well as deductive logic. These tests can be very challenging if youre not familiar with them, so do take time to practice, especially as only one attempt is permitted per email address!  Previous applicants tell us that with practice you can learn how to answer the logical reasoning questions accurately, so it is worth working your way through example tests.   Although they are multiple choice, in some cases you have to choose from a LONG list of possible answers guessing will NOT be a sensible strategy!! You might also want to check out the psychometric test info on our website, including practice test materials. In particular, try Graduates First which provides worked solutions for the answers you get wrong in its tests. We’d definitely suggest using a proper calculator when completing the numerical reasoning test and not the one on your   phone. You’ll be able to do the STP tests at any time until the closing date but don’t leave it until the last minute: what if your Wifi fails or the site crashes with the traffic of all the last minute tests being taken? If you have a disability or a condition like dyslexia, you can request extra time to complete these tests. You’ll need to send evidence to support your request  at least 3 working days before the aptitude tests deadline date i.e. ideally before Friday 17th January February!   If you fail to notify the team before the deadline date, you may not be granted the extra time you need. (Don’t start the tests before you receive a response from them as they are unable to adjust it later). See Step 5 on the NSHCS “Applying to the programme” page FAQs about psychometric tests on the Careers Service website Being optimistic If you’re one of the lucky ones who gets invited to interview, you might want to check out the interview dates (in previous years, they have had specific dates for each specialism) â€" there may be no flexibility, so move heaven and earth to get there if you are invited. Interview support for Manchester students and recent graduates Being pragmatic Manchester students and graduates have been successful in the past but the number of applicants far outstrips the places available.   Every year, highly qualified and experienced candidates dont get through, so dont beat yourself up if your application is rejected.   Ensure you have a fall-back option in place.   Make an appointment with a careers consultant if you are not sure where to start. STP Interviews The STP uses the Multiple Mini Interview format and has done for some time. There are 4 stations; with c4 questions at each station; 10 minutes per station and 2-minute rest in between each station.  However, some years they change the station themes, so this is the info from 2019 for guidance only. (We will share any updates with you as they come to light). 1: General Science station Tip: read up on recent scientific news articles; subscribe to journals or scientific blogs; listen to podcasts and revise research methods. 2 and 3: Specialism Specific stations NEW   there will be TWO specialist stations this time!   You need to understand the role you would be going into; to look at the curricula for your specialism on the NSHCS website and demonstrate motivation and passion for the specialism you have chosen. Having awareness of the following may be helpful: Scientific basis of techniques/procedures Diseases and health conditions What are the current developments, topical issues? 4: Values and Behaviour and Leadership and Management station NEW we understand that the 4th station will  cover all these areas. You MUST read the NHS constitution and have examples to demonstrate each value from your experience (improving lives; compassion; everyone counts; respect and dignity; commitment to quality of care; and working together for patients). Note: These examples do not have to be patient focused! You can use examples from University projects or work experience.   The following examples may help you to understand the context and think about how to demonstrate the NHS values: How would you explain the scientific aspects of your work- for example interpret test results- to an anxious patient, who has no background in science, on a busy ward? Improving Lives is a NHS value that emphasises a core function of the NHS and innovation is central to improvement. The role of clinical science is to improve patient outcomes by developing new and existing tests. How would you answer Tell me about a time when you have found a new way to approach a task or made a suggestion that improved practice? What are your expectations from the STP? 5 things to remember when youre hunting down a law graduate job - Debut Its summer and every law student is doing the same thing. Tracking down a law graduate job and wrestling it into submission. We have the utmost confidence in you, law students. No-one out there works harder or is more dedicated to their course (okay, maybe those pesky medicine students). Allow us then to give you some sage advice. The chase to a law graduate job is long and arduous. May these tips ensure that your hunt bears fruit. Looking for a job is a full time job We probably dont need to tell you that looking for a training contract is insanely competitive. To cope with the amount of applications theyre getting every day, firms are often highly selective with what applications they even look at. Unfortunately, non-Oxbridge applicants or those without super-high grades tend to have a tougher time. If thats you, its a good idea to reach out to as many places as you can. Block out an amount of time every day, just to work on your CV and application. Youll be thankful later. Solicitors, secure the position early To all my would-be solicitors out there, take note. Just like we said above, there are a  lot  of you. You dont want to get left in the lurch after doing your Legal Practice Course, only to find that theres nothing waiting for you. If you can, secure a Training Contract first (you can apply up to 2 years in advance). Even better, be sure to do plenty of internships and vacation schemes in the run up to final year and enquire about sponsorship from potential employers if youre worried about those huge fees. Demonstrate your knowledge outside of law It probably hurts you a lot to read that, having read 100 seemingly endless law books but its true. To get a law graduate job, youll need an array of skills. Some youll pick up over the course of a law degree. Some youll need to learn on your own. As well as flaunting your good grades, try to show that you have been working on things like commercial awareness,  emotional intelligence  and people skills. Those intangible traits might just give you the edge. Theres more to life than law firms If you got into law degree, a law graduate job is probably your end goal. Many people you know will likely have solicitor or barrister listed as their dream job. You can do anything you set your mind to, but remember: those arent your only options. You could be a paralegal, a chartered legal executive or a chartered secretary or legal counsel too. And besides, they are plenty of job outside of the legal world that would be a prime fit for a legal graduate. Those include a clerkship in the Houses of Parliament, Civil Service Fast Stream, legal publishing and loads more. Dont give up Having said that, if a law graduate job is your dream: chase it. Law is an all-consuming career that requires true dedication in order to succeed. The fact that youve made it this far shows you have that dedication. One Lump or Two

One Lump or Two Remember when sugar used to come in cubes? Then, remember when you went to tea and the hostess asked you if you wanted One lump or Two? No, I am not that old either, but Ive seen that scene in movies and read about it. So, heres my question, One page or two?. In other words, should your resume be not quite sweet enough to drink or too sweet to finish? This debate has gone on forever and will continue. It is all based on personal preference- the preference of the reader, whom you do not know. Great, so this question still goes unanswered. Think about the sugar analogy. If the hostess only gave you one lump and you desired two, you wouldnt enjoy the tea. If, by some miracle, the sugar floated on top, you might drink the sweeter tea until you reached the less sweet tea. Ok, back to the resume. Start your resume with the sweetest part first. In other words, write a summary that states almost all your qualifications for the job. Then the reader has enough info to be tempted to read more. My advice would be to not limit your talents to a single page. Frequently, very talented people leave off information or write about their jobs in resume-ese which means, half a sentence that says absolutely nothing. Their logic, I was going to tell them more in the interview. Sure, thats not going to happen. It has to be disclosed on the resume otherwise you wont get the interview. You have to keep the reader interested/pleased, so they will want to continue reading. Keep the stories you tell focused on the job you are applying for. Conversely, if you have two pages filled with words, the poor reader is going to be overwhelmed. Just like some people might feel with two lumps of sugar. So, dont get too wordy. Dont make the text too small. Leave white space, more that .001 of an inch, please. Preparing your resumeis a series of drafts, re-writes and edits.Just likeGoldilocks and the three bears, the first will be too hard, thenext will be too soft and thelast should be just right.
